Saga Bara

Saga Bara is a typical Odia snack/side dish. It is easy to make yet still delicious to taste. which is packed with carbohydrates, proteins, minerals and vitamins, and regular consumption helps in easing digestion, excessive menstruation and weight management. Since it is high in iron content and dietary fibre, it is good for anaemic patients, and reduces cholesterol and risks of cardiovascular diseases. Amaranth leaves and stems are good economic sources of carotenoids, proteins, including the essential amino acids methionine and lysine, dietary fibre and minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, copper, phosphorus, zinc, iron.

Recipe for Saga Bara
Ingredients required:

  • 2 bunches of Amaranth (Koshala saga in Odia) or you can take any kind of saga.
  • 1/2cup rice powder or you can soak rice and make a fine paste and use.
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder.
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder or you can skip this part and add chopped green chilly.
  • 1 teaspoon ruchi curry powder.
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • Refined oil for shallow fry

Method

  • Clean and wash saga properly.
  • Finely chop them.
  • Add all the ingredients given above together.
  • If water is required add little or rice powder is needed then add little.
  • Mash all the ingredients properly as you can hold and make baras (tikkis).
  • Heat your tawa with oil.
  • And shallow fry them with minimum oil.

Serve it hot with a proper meal or you can serve with tea in evening time too.
